ELICE - SCULPTURE

from the ‘SPECIMENS COLLECTION’

by Julio Martínez Barnetche, México, 2023

SIZE: 50 x 60 x 32 cm // H: 19.68" x 23.62" x 12.59"
MATERIAL: direct carving on white Vego Marble, white Quartz from Boyacá, Colombia, Granadillo wood, hand-forged brass

STORY: Julio states: “This sculpture took a while to develop. All pieces are made and created specifically for it. Some years ago I had the idea to create a magnifying glass to appreciate small stone pieces. This was around the time when I started working with small-format semiprecious stones and attending mineral fairs. I decided to replicate the mechanism of an Italian compass that I bought to reproduce some sculptures I made earlier for a collector.

It took about a year from when I built this mechanism until now in 2023 when I used it in this piece. The magnifying glass that I eagerly wanted to create was finally made. I used granadillo wood that once belonged to the sculptor Francisco Moyao. Once the piece started taking shape, I liked it a lot.”
