‘MITLA’ MIRROR - BROWN

by SABINO GUISU, OAX, MEXICO, 2026

SIZE: 123 x 198 cm // 48.4 x 78 inches
MATERIAL: Parota wood, glass mirror

The MITLA Mirror by Mexican artist Sabino Guisu draws inspiration from the Zapotec archaeological site of Mitla, Oaxaca. Framed in grained brown parota wood, it reinterprets the site's iconic stepped-fret (greca escalonada) motifs—symbols of continuity, transition, and sacred order within Mesoamerican architecture.

Combining a functional mirror with a sculptural frame, the work transforms an everyday object into a contemporary reflection on cultural memory. More than a surface for reflection, the mirror becomes a meeting point between past and present. Ancestral symbolism is translated into a timeless design object that bridges art, architecture, and ritual.

Sabino Guisu (b. 1986, Juchitán, Oaxaca) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is deeply rooted in Zapotec heritage and Indigenous cosmology. Working across painting, music, and contemporary art, he explores themes of cultural memory, transformation, social justice, and ecology. Drawing on ancestral knowledge, mythology, and the rich symbolism of Oaxaca, Guisu reinterprets traditional narratives through a contemporary lens, creating works that bridge past and present while activating new dialogues around identity, ritual, and the sacred.
