ABOUT
Stefan Buxbaum (b. 1971) studied sculpture at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and has been working across the fields of sculpture, design, and furniture since 2003. He lives and works in eastern Austria.
Concrete is his material of choice, through which he continuously challenges both the qualities and limitations of the medium to remarkable effect. In particular, he is recognised for his exceptional mastery of concrete casting techniques. There is a technical sophistication inherent in his work, which has its own melody and adds a new lightness and aesthetic to the gravity of the material.
CONCRETE CUBPOARDS / CABINETS - with PLANT surfaces
Intriguing cabinets or cupboards, crafted of cast concrete in a special technique with plant specimens imprinted on its doors. The softness and sensibility of nature represented through these beautiful plants contrast with the hardness of the concrete, which creates a surprising sensation. The plants appear as being petrified. We are also reminded of the art deco era or Jugenstil, however, in new flesh, projected into the present and the future through the use of this contemporary material as is concrete.
The beauty of nature becomes even more manifest, the finesse of the plants more obvious, being cast into a timeless state for eternity.
