MARION FRIEDMANN GALLERY’S SECOND PARTICIPATION AT ZONAMACO, LATIN AMERICA'S TRAILBLAZING ART FAIR IN THE HEART OF MÉXICO CITY. THE GALLERY BOOTH PRESENTED A SELECTION OF WORKS BY GALLERY ARTISTS JULIO MARTÍNEZ BARNETCHE, THIERRY JEANNOT AND LAS Ánimas, our new artist representation from Seville, Spain

We were full of joy to be back for the 2nd time at the Zona Maco Art Fair, in Mexico City, from 7-11 February 2024. Our stand was a mezmerizing display of craftsmanship and wonder, perfect for the 20th-anniversary edition of the Art Fair. We were delighted to present our new artist representation LAS ÁNIMAS, an artist couple from Seville, Spain, who amazed with bold geometric hand-tufted tapestries and a pair of enlightened wall sculptures. The pieces transmit a dreamlike world, full of visions, references to art, history, mysticism and magic, sacred symbols and spirituality. The works display a striking iconography, somehow and curiously reminiscent of Mexican symbolism, making it a perfect fit for their debut show in Mexico and with Marion Friedmann Gallery.

LAS ÁNIMAS conceive their works as TOTEMS: triggers of collective memory, creating bridges to new states of consciousness that encompass references as distant as science fiction, tribal culture, reality distortion, cybernetics, industrial electronic music, and architectural brutalism.

LAUNCHED at ZONA MACO: ‘ANACRONOS’ - a pair of wall light sculptures

Their work is created in their own studio, as the result of experimentation with materials and the learning and development of new techniques, where their own hands always play a fundamental role, imprinting a unique seal on each of their pieces.

Stunning the audience last year, we were back again with work by the Mexican artist Julio Martínez Barnetche. We showed unique furniture hand-carved from volcanic stone and wood and 4 sculptures from his 'specimen' collection. Whimsical and technical sculptures, to display thoroughly sourced gem specimens, like marble, amber, brass, quartz and a remarkable 3.8-kilo piece of Meteorite from Argentina. An extraordinary long wood bench with 4 swivelling seats by Julio, centrally placed in the booth invited visitors to come in and marvel at the works on show.

We were also back with our staple artist Thierry Jeannot, who created 2 new pieces for the show. He surprised us with ‘Retablo/Altar’, a jewellery-like mural light installation, made up of 9 separate parts. The shelf-light ensemble is made of bent stainless steel sheets with plastic, metals and vintage glass parts. The piece refects a chaotic movement, evoking a Baroque essence in contemporary México City. His second piece is ‘Distortion’, a pendant lamp, in a new evolution, hand-crafted with Thierry’s signature recycled plastic parts and metals. The piece distorts the classic composition of traditional chandeliers.
